Early Use of Rolling Devices in Continuous Sealed Joint Inspection

As a concept, the idea of pushing on a sealant bead with a blunt object is probably as old as weatherseals. Using a wheeled “rolling probe" is the next logical step if the goal is to obtain larger data samples. Three active long-term members of ASTM C 24 began to use “screen rollers" (Fig. 1) to evaluate joint seals some years ago in their professional practice.[32] As stated by Klosowski, “With this test, we roll over the entire joint. It is fast, but it is also efficient in that it looks at all of the joint and not just discrete places along the joint. This field test to determine the extent of problems, if any, is not a trivial matter. In fact, it is fundamental and badly needed" [7].
