Attached Piers in 100mm Blockwork

Attached piers in blockwork are mostly required internally when there is a requirement to support the end of a lintel or structural beam. The attached pier in Fig 104 is 440mm wide and projects from the face of the main block wall by 225mm. The only way to tie in the pier to the main blockwork on alternate courses is to lay pairs of blocks flat on every course. On the courses where the blockwork is not tied in to the main wall, a full block is run through the back of the pier – this is simply a reverse of the bonding arrangement on the tie-courses where a full block is visible at the front of the pier.
