BRIDGING OPENINGS IN CAVITY WALLS

To allow construction to carry on over the top of an opening in a wall, the opening must be bridged with a lintel that is wider than the opening, allowing the ends to bear on to the walling either side of the opening. The purpose of a lintel is to support the weight of the masonry above the opening and to distribute that load through the height and width of the lintel down into the brickwork either side, upon which the lintel ends bear.
