CUTTING TOOLS

Brick Hammer

A brick hammer is predominantly used for rough cutting and trimming the excess from cut bricks, although the bladed end, with care, can also be used for trimming the fair-faced edge of a cut if the bolster chisel has not quite done its job.

An alternative to the brick hammer is a ‘scutch’, which, instead of a bladed end, has a slot into which a replaceable comb or blade is inserted. Its main advantage over a brick hammer is that the main tool never wears out, whereas continued re-sharpening will eventually wear out the brick hammer.
