TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS FOR SETTING-OUT

When setting-out a small building, assuming machine excavation methods for the foundations, the following tools will be needed:

• builder’s square

• claw hammer;

• ‘long-arm’ square;

• lump hammer;

• pencil;

• tenon saw;

• spirit level;

• straight-edge;

• tape measures (5m and 30m; tapes made of fabric are best avoided as they will stretch and give a false measurement!).

Equipment will include a Cowley Automatic Level, a tripod, a target and staff. Materials will include drawings containing relevant dimensions, a nylon ranging line, round-headed 50mm clout nails (galvanized), timber for profile boards and timber for wooden pegs.
