The first component of the conventional metal system is the aluminum joist. The extruded aluminum joist takes the shape of a modified I beam with a formed channel in the top flange in which a wood nailer strip 2 X 3 in. (50.8 X 76.2 mm) is inserted; the plywood deck is then nailed to the nailer strip. Figure 2.6 shows two different shapes of extruded aluminum joist.
