Corrosion protection of ropes
High-strength ropes react very sensitively to mechanical damage (notching) and material loss (wear, corrosion). Damage is repairable only with difficulty or not at all, so tension members should be so well protected that corrosion cannot start. The design of structures should also make it possible to exchange tension members.4
Corrosion protection measures for wire ropes can essentially be divided into four categories. The individual wires can be protected, the rope internally or the rope externally. The corrosion protection can also be achieved or improved by appropriate design detailing.
